Japanese imports

Sourcing & Importing

What we mean by a Japanese import.

We don’t sell UK-spec Mitsubishis. We source the cars Japan kept for itself — from auction halls in Tokyo to your driveway in Hertfordshire.

Why a Japanese import

Three reasons enthusiasts cross an ocean for these cars.

UK-spec stock is what manufacturers shipped here to suit our market. JDM stock is what Japan built for itself — usually with different trims, different engines, and a culture of preservation we never matched.

01 / Condition

Verified, not vibe-checked

Every car comes with an auction-grade sheet documenting mileage, panels, mechanicals and interior wear before it leaves Japan. No optimistic eBay descriptions, no “some marks” ambiguity.

02 / Specification

Cars never sold in the UK

R34 GT-R V-Spec II Nürs. 70-Series Land Cruisers in diesel manual. RZ-S Twin-Turbo Supras. Pajero Evolutions. Trims, engines and editions that left UK dealers years before they were built.

03 / Culture

A market that preserves cars

Garage storage, fanatical service records, low annual mileages. The kind of ownership that’s the norm in Japan and the exception here. By the time we land them, they’ve already had the best of their life.

Let’s be clear

A Japanese import is not the same thing as a Japanese car.

Misconception

“So this is just a UK-spec Mitsubishi?”

No. A UK-spec Mitsubishi was built for British buyers and sold through a UK dealer. An import is a car that was built for the Japanese market and ridden on Japanese roads — different trims, often different engines, always right-hand drive.

Misconception

“Doesn’t importing mean dodgy paperwork?”

Not the way we do it. Every car we sell is IVA-tested, type-approved, MOT’d, taxed and registered on UK plates before you collect it. You receive a V5C in your name. There’s no extra hoop on you.

Misconception

“Aren’t these old cars rotten by now?”

If they were UK-spec, often yes. JDM examples come from a culture of garaged, low-mileage, fastidiously serviced ownership that simply doesn’t exist here. We bid only on cars whose auction sheets confirm condition.

Misconception

“What about parts and servicing?”

For most popular imports (Skyline, Supra, RX-7, Land Cruiser, S2000, NSX) the specialist parts market in the UK is mature and Lectus has a network of independent garages we trust for ongoing service.

The Process

From a Japanese auction hall to your driveway.

  1. 01

    Brief & search

You tell us the car you’re after — or trust our recommendation. We scan Japan’s major auction houses (USS, TAA, JAA, HAA) daily, filtering by your spec, condition grade and budget.

USS TAA JAA HAA Trade-in offers
  2. 02

    Auction-sheet vetting

Before we bid, the car’s grading sheet is independently translated and inspected for accident history, paintwork, mileage rollback indicators, mechanical concerns and interior wear. You see the sheet too.

    Grade verified History translated
  3. 03

    Bid & win

We bid on your behalf with a transparent target price. If we win, we transfer ownership at the auction within 48 hours and arrange Japanese deregistration.

Transparent fee No win, no charge
  4. 04

    Shipping & UK arrival

Container or RoRo shipping from Yokohama to Southampton or Bristol. Typically 6–8 weeks door-to-port. Customs duties (10% + 20% VAT on used) are calculated upfront so there are no surprises.

Container / RoRo Insured in transit
  5. 05

    IVA, type approval & registration

Once landed, the car goes through IVA testing (Individual Vehicle Approval) and our workshop addresses anything required for UK compliance. We register the car with DVLA and have your V5C posted to your name.

IVA tested MOT’d UK plated V5C in your name
  6. 06

    Prep & handover

Full service, valet, inspection, and a 6-month nationwide Blue Chip warranty. You book a private viewing — we keep it unhurried — and you drive away the same day.

    6-month warranty By appointment

Our positioning

We do one thing, and we do it carefully.

What we are

  • A small, appointment-only specialist sourcing JDM stock to order
  • Direct buyers at Japanese auction houses (not middlemen)
  • An in-house workshop handling IVA, registration and prep
  • FCA-authorised, with finance and warranty packages
  • Available for ongoing aftercare and parts sourcing

What we’re not

  • A volume forecourt selling UK-spec Mitsubishis and Subarus
  • A flipping operation moving cars without owning them
  • A “we’ll find anything” broker without a quality filter
  • Open to walk-ins — viewings are by appointment only

Have a car in mind?

Tell us what you’re after — we’ll source it.

from the moment I met John for the initial look at the car I found him to be totally honest and easy going with no hard sale at all. He left me on my own to check over the car which i did over a couple of hours, without any interruptions or glossing over anything at all. The car itself so far has been an absolute dream with no issues. I would have no qualms with recommending Lectus Cars.

John is really good. Very open, friendly and most of all fair. I firmly believe in you but into people not the product. And with the intention of just viewing the car and showing it to my wife as she was worried about the size of a Discovery 5 SUV - however we were sold by John. He let us moot around the car, drive it in the area around his plot. We took it for a formal test drive on the road. He was able to cut a good deal which included an extended 12 month warranty with Blue Chip and we were able to pick up the car the next day. If you are in the Hertfordshire region looking to buy a car. You need to speak and take a look at John and his stock of cars first.

This place is A++ sales and service. We drove 2hours to buy our Lexus Gs from here and it was just as expected. John is amazing and very helpful person. They make the paperwork easy, process smooth and stress-free. Would 100% recommend.

Brilliant service, and very friendly from the whole team .. Bought a Range Rover l405 The car genuinely was much better in the flesh than any of the pictures or video on there website. I traveled over 300 miles for this car from the Lake District Cumbria.. obviously to there garage in Broxbourne .. And having now owned it for nearly 3 weeks and doing over 1200 miles in the first week.. it’s a dream to drive and been completely trouble free… Many many thanks I would recommend this garage to anyone

Martin Watts

I had a great experience with Lectus Cars they were super helpful and genuinely kind throughout the whole process. They were happy to accommodate my timings and even had the car fully serviced and MOT’ed before I picked it up. Altogether it was a smooth, positive car-buying experience. I would definitely buy from them again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
